About Global Learning Summit

Each year, Seattle-based nonprofit EarthCorps brings together local and global experts and leaders for discussions on cutting-edge environmental topics on one central theme, “Environmental Justice.” Join EarthCorps and friends for panels and presentations on the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation, an intersectional understanding of the climate crisis, and how we can develop meaningful relationships with our local lands, waters, and people.

Recognizing that cost can be a barrier for meaningful and relevant professional development, EarthCorps is thrilled to offer complimentary tickets for anyone who wishes to attend. You may also pay it forward by making an additional donation to support someone unable to pay.

Jeudy Djemson is the Executive Director & Educational Program Manager at Positive Action for Haiti in Gonaives, Haiti. Through his work, he inspires Haiti’s youth to tackle the country’s environmental problems, such as food insecurity, by leading restoration efforts through regular planting events and teaching communities how to grow food by providing the resources for small gardens.

Preserving Culture and Conserving Nature in Ukraine

Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park

Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park, located in the Southern region of western Ukraine, is the country’s largest nature conservation area. Considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine, the nature park is home to native species, including the long-eared owl (Asio otus) and the great egret (Ardea alba). EarthCorps International Alum Ivanka Sarakhman will discuss the significance of the park and how it can help preserve the country’s culture.

Ivanna Sarakhman (she/her) is a PhD student in the geography field and is working towards conservation efforts in the Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park as a Junior Researcher. Originally from the Ukraine cultural region called Podillya. Her professional goal is to build a sustainable environment. She is passionate about actively participating in initiatives that promote nature conservation, sustainable development, and a balanced relationship between humans and the environment. She seeks to gain the insights and expertise needed to contribute to Ukraine’s decision-making processes for the environment. Additionally, she loves spending time outdoors, exploring nature, and learning about the cultural background of local communities.

The Ol Bolosat Conservancy is a community-founded nonprofit organization focused on environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and community empowerment in central Kenya. James Akedi, a 2002 International Alum, is a seasoned leader and strategic thinker with over 15 years of experience spanning project management, financial oversight, wildlife conservation, and community development. Currently serving as Chief Executive Officer at The Ol Bolosat Conservancy, James manages programs focused on environmental sustainability and socio-economic development. His background includes pivotal roles in both governmental and non-governmental sectors, notably with the County Government of Busia and World Climate Corps. Known for his expertise in financial management, strategic planning, and cross-cultural communication, James has led initiatives that have seen him partner with donor-funding organizations such as The Ford Foundation, CIDA, and UNDP. Holding a Master’s in Sociology with a focus on Community Development and Project Management from Egerton University, he brings a people-centric, innovative approach to leadership and impact assessment. His dedication to sustainable development and capacity building makes him an invaluable asset at EarthCorps’ Global Learning Summit, where he will share insights into navigating complex environmental and community challenges.

Deogratias Ryumugabe

International Alum 2024

Conservation Biologist

Deogratias grew up in post-genocide Rwanda, a country in the midst of rebuilding, where young people were inspired to be the foundation of a renewed nation. Amidst this environment of resilience and hope, Deogratias discovered his passion for science as a gateway to wonder and exploration. This early fascination led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Zoology and Conservation from the University of Rwanda. His professional career began at a local NGO, studying and promoting the conservation of bats, where he worked to shift negative perceptions of bats. He later became Deputy Manager of Rwanda’s first sanctuary for disabled Grey Crowned Cranes, where he led education and conservation efforts. As an International Corps member with EarthCorps in Washington, he continues to learn and apply ecological restoration techniques and leadership, always driven by a vision to protect the natural world and foster community collaboration

Hi! My name is Tris. I enjoy outdoor recreation, extreme sports, and complex socio political analysis. I went to Seattle Pacific University and received a degree in Political Science and Philosophy, and currently do carpentry, gardening, skateboarding, cycling, photography, mushroom foraging, and other things. In my free time, I enjoy imported beer and cigars, and spending time with my homies in every city! I want to make the world a better place every day, and use gratitude to project my privilege into a sustainable lifestyle.

Amy Hersh (MA, LMHC) is a licensed mental health counselor who offers ecotherapy and specializes in work with neurodivergent and queer adults. While at EarthCorps, Amy discovered the field of “ecopsychology”, which focuses on humans fundamental connection to nature. Amy then found her way to graduate school and gained experience working with clients at community colleges, group practices, and community organizations. Amy now runs a small private practice offering outdoor sessions at local parks in King County, and hopes to branch out to include options like hiking, retreats, and community groups. When not working, Amy can be found cuddling her greyhound, reading, hyper-focusing on a new crafting hobby, and spending time outside.

Meet the Speaker:

Ugnė Vilkevičiūtė

International Alum 2024

Ugnė’s passion for nature began in her childhood in Lithuania, where she spent countless hours exploring the outdoors. Her deep connection with nature was forged through wild camping, hiking, and kayaking, which ultimately inspired her to pursue a career dedicated to environmental issues. To achieve this, Ugnė embarked on an academic journey abroad. Unique academic, cultural, and work experiences in England and Australia threw in new perspectives. In particular, Ugnė became drawn to the intersection of environmental and social issues. This interest manifested in Ugnė’s final year dissertation at University College London. Her research analyzed the effectiveness of Rights of Nature laws for nature conservation and their impact on Indigenous communities. This research underscored the importance of integrating social justice with environmental conservation. As an international corps member Ugnė had a chance to to explore environmentalism in the US and gain new skills in nature restoration, develop leadership abilities, and become part of a global community of environmental professionals. Currently, Ugnė is focused on exploring opportunities to work at the intersection of environmental and social issues in Europe, seeking new ways to contribute to both sustainability and social equity.

I’m Zahra Dawood, a graphic designer currently working at Genome Training & Consulting and a proud co-founder of Dolaby, where I channel my creative energy into meaningful projects. As an INFJ, I bring a blend of insight, passion, and empathy into everything I do, always striving to create designs that connect on a deeper level and finding thoughtful solutions to the challenges we face.

My personality also drives me to make a positive impact on the environment. I’m committed to sustainable practices like recycling clothing and reducing waste, all with the aim of helping preserve our planet.

Aslan Renner

Aslan grew up in Portland, OR, and moved to Tacoma to attend the University of Puget Sound where they studied environmental policy and politics and government. They are passionate about doing hands on environmental restoration work which is what lead them to EarthCorps where they joined as a crew member in June of this year. In their free time, Aslan enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time with their two cats.

Lottie has a lifetimes worth of observation of the outdoors. As a child (and still to this day) they enjoyed hands on learning and getting dirty while doing it. In high school they were apart of an Environmental Academy which further ingrained their love for all things ecology and systems. When Lottie isn’t yelling “Hot Saw” from deep in the woods doing fire prevention or screaming in the streets for human/earth rights – you’ll find them laying at home recharging and indulging in what they call “rotting”.

mikey pazen (they/them) was born in Denver, Colorado, but has since come to call Seattle home. They first began their environmental career in Washington before leading a trail crew and a chainsaw crew in Colorado, an experience that taught them much about leadership and collaboration. They have a passion for restoration and are thrilled to be spending the year working in the beautiful PNW! When not in the field, you can find mikey hiking, biking, rock climbing, exploring the city, or basking in the sun.

To help cover the costs of the Global Learning Summit, we have set a registration amount of USD 25 for three days, USD 20 for two days, and USD 10 for one day. All attendees will receive an email containing a link to join the online sessions.
