Memorable Moments
at EarthCorps

"The circle-up was the most wholesome daily act that tied together the whole experience for me. There were too many memorable times to count..."

"Meeting my best friends."

"Performing a good-bye dance with my crew at the final retreat to "Miss You Much" by Janet Jackson."

"Removing fabric in Commencement Bay...our first day of work and the coldest, most miserable of the season, but we really bonded as a crew that day!"

"Working with an all-female crew for a day!"

"Joe Pursley welcoming us to "church" on the Skykomish River."

"Riding in F-350 in the summertime with my stewardship crew and having great conversations about random things."

"I loved the cultural nights that EC hosted for the community. The inter-nationals were able to share their countries...these were irreplaceable events!"

"We were doing creek restoration in Dead Horse Canyon. We built some pools in the creek, and 45-minutes later we saw 3 baby salmon resting in the brand new pools. It was so gratifying!"

"Camping on top of Rattlesnake Mountain in the summer...the Mountain Works program took me outside my comfort zone in the beginning of the week, and by the end of the week, I had achieved balance."

"A night in camp with naughty bears and the kids from Orion Center. We had to bang pots & pans and move our tents...the kids were so scared! We bonded and the kids had the adventure of their lives!"

"Frantically trying to deliver a grant application on time...battling through Montlake traffic, driving around downtown to find the building AND trying to get a parking space with only moments to spare before the deadline."

Alumnus '10 ZAMBIA

Ernest Chisanga

Chisamba, Zambia

"I am okay and all is well down here in Zambia.I am excited with EarthCorps progress and how I miss the moments.I have a new job as an HIV/AIDS and Nutrition Program Officer focusing on organic foods and awareness in community and schools. The Washington University research is still in line after preliminary assessments were done with a representative from there...I am glad to mention that EarthCorps connections are part of Chipembi Agricultural College International reputation it has attracted and the college will soon become a training center for America's PeaceCorps volunteers coming to Zambia beginning January 2012. Right now we are busy refurbishing hostels and putting final touches to our institution to be ready for the PeaceCorps program.

I am still teaching part time and the Environmental Youth Program has grown to a remarkable level due to the experience and expertise I gained with EarthCorps. I am proud today to say that Earthcorps has made me a stronger person and adventurous in my quest to serve my community better than before. To all the EarthCorps Staff, members and my wonderful homestay family, Jeff and Marla, I pass my profound gratitude with honor and warm greetings."

Alumna '09, USA

Hollis Emery

Juneau, Alaska

Hollis was a Corpsmember and Crew Leader at EarthCorps in 2009. She is currently the Southeast Regional Manager at SAGA in Juneau, Alaska. Here is her reflection on the journey from here to there.

SAGA

"Before I showed up at EarthCorps, I was working for a law firm in San Francisco. I was thinking about environmental law and realized I wanted some on-the-ground practical experience as a foundation for that kind of work. I looked around for opportunities outside and jumped on the chance to work with EarthCorps. And I'm so happy I was accepted!

After an awesome season at EarthCorps with great crew leaders and an awesome crew, I realized I was in love with conservation work and wanted to continue in that field. I checked out a few different Corps programs and ended up as a Crew Leader for Conservation Corps Minnesota, based out of Moose Lake. Because of all I learned at EarthCorps (and because I had a chance to lead a crew for a few months while I was there) I felt really prepared to lead my own crew. I had an amazing crew and we got to work on a wide variety of projects. We all went through basic wildland firefighting training and spent about a week last spring on a fire outside of Grand Rapids, MN. We worked on a lot of trails around the area-some motorized and some hiking/horse trails, did quite a bit of invasive removal (buckthorn!) and got to camp in some beautiful areas along the North Shore of Lake Superior. One really memorable project involved restoration work for the Nature Conservancy. The project site was most easily accessible by canoe so every morning we'd load up chainsaws, brushers and other tools and paddle to the site through patches of wild rice. Beautiful! At the project site we'd cut some trees to open up the canopy and plant cedars and spruce. We all ran chainsaws quite a bit, too, which was great training and experience. As the season in Minnesota was drawing to a close I started looking around for other opportunities.

I applied for a Regional Manager position with SAGA, a conservation organization in Alaska and when I got the position the allure of Alaska was too strong to pass up! So now here I am in Juneau, managing 3 youth corps crews and 3 adult corps crews. Our Crew Members will arrive June 1 but the Team Leaders have been here since mid-March. I've had the opportunity to design and facilitate trainings and now I'm making adjustments to the project schedule and coordinating logistics. Because Southeast Alaska is made up of a lot of islands, our crews get to hop on ferries and sometimes float planes to get from one project to another. They'll be doing a lot of trail work for the Forest Service and Park Service, some invasive removal and sight-line improvement projects for the Alaska Department of Transportation. I'm looking forward to an awesome season and still find myself asking, "hmm...what would Randi and Erin (EC Program Managers) do?""

Alumna '09 Russia

Svetlana Shokhonova

Irkutsk, Russia

After coming back from EarthCorps I was selected to lead the crew leaders courses for summer camps at the Great Baikal Trail Association (GBT). ALUMNUS '08 NAMIBIA

Ignatius "Iggy" Davids

Otjiwarong, Namibia

I will be responsible in helping with the education curriculums for environmental education in schools and communities. Our teams mission will be to educate our communities about the survival and importance of our cheetahs and all big cats.

Because we have a very high number of communal farmers around Otjiwarong and ironically its where the high number of cheetah population in concentrated. So there is always this cheetah and farmer conflict. So we have come up with a very efficient module on working closely with the farming communities. Our main aim is to help farmers see how predators can be of vital importance to their livestock and farmlands, I know one would wonder how? But what the farmers don’t know is that the high number of big cats in their area, will always put their livestock on high alert, which basically means that the herds will try to stay as closely as possible and in return this will help with the loosening up of the soil and this helps with the herds being responsible for planting their own grass for the next year.

I will be staying at the Cheetah Conservation Fund research and education center 70 kilometers out of Otjiwarongo. We have opportunities for international volunteers to come and do research, take care of the rehabilitated cats or help with education activities. For more information check out: www.cheetah.org.

Panama

HELLO PEACE CORPS/EARTHCORPS FRIENDS!

I've known Juan Perez via email for almost two years now, but I just finally got the chance to meet him in person in his native Panama. We have run parallel pathways, through both EarthCorps International in Seattle, Washington, and Peace Corps Panama. Juan even lived with the same host family as my friend Alberto (Honduras) lived in when he was on my crew in EarthCorps. Juan told me that he and Alberto were the only two Latinos ever to live with the Tettas. They often hosted volunteers from other countries. I love the smallness of our world and the meaningful connections we are able to make with people with whom we share it.

Through Earthcorps she connected with the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice where she’s worked as a community organizer since 2003.

ALUMNUS '00 PHILIPPINES

Erwin Galido

Manila, Philippines

I recently started working at ChildFund. I am the grant coordinator for their eco-scouts project. The over goal of the project is to reduce the risk and vulnerability of the children, families and communities to the threat brought about by environmental degradation. The area that I'm working was devastated by flash floods, also similar to Manila last 2004.

One of the components of the project is rehabilitation and I have a big task in trying to find a way on how to restore or rehabilitate a major river that has been critically damaged by the typhoon and reforest a portion of a major watershed that has been clear cut by loggers here.

I will be organizing also children for the eco-scouts program and we will do a lot of advocacy work in schools and communities.
Since this is the first time that ChildFund embarked on an environmental focused project they gave me a lot of freedom to do things that would be significant based on my experiences. I will be able to use again the skills that I learned from EarthCorps.
